Rising Metal Prices

Process of a handmade sterling silver pendant with teardrop shaped gemstone.

I’ve been hand-crafting jewelry since the early 2000’s (don’t try to do the math, I’m an elder). Silver has always been my material of choice, due to its ductility, malleability and, let’s face it, its fabulous luster.  With the exception of dainty chains and findings, I’ve handmade everything from scratch, using raw (often reclaimed) silver materials such as an ingot, sheet and wire.  It’s like baking a with individual (sometimes organic) ingredients even if premixed was available to you.

However the price of silver along with other precious metals (gold, platinum, palladium) have all gone up significantly in price due tariffs, global demand, industrial uses for these metals (ex solar panels, medical equipment cars etc.)and all other things capitalism related.

This January silver went over $100 an ounce when it was $30 an ounce a year prior.  I recently looked at an invoice from 2008, where I paid $26.70 for a 10 foot bulk sterling silver chain and in 2013 I paid $53.12.  Looking at the price for that same exact 10ft chain and it's currently a whopping $187.63!

Long story short, my commitment has and always will be craftsmanship and (material) transparency. However, continuing to fabricate in precious metals has become a big part of my expenses where I’ve had to adjust my prices.

“Silver” Lining

…there are plenty of other medium and materials choices out there waiting to be explored and turned into adornment.

While silver sparkles, it lacks the ability to ability to produce radiant colors like other copper based alloys.  I’ve been adding more colorful patina jewelry to my Colors collection.

And I do and will continue to have sales, especially on pieces and collections that have been shining bright but haven't sparked anyone's adornment...yet.  Plus if you purchase through me directly, in person or reaching out prior I'd be happy to offer a mini discount (especially on combined purchase and/or payment with cash or Venmo).

Fun fact: I got hooked on making jewelry doing beading in my youth and if I ever needed an excuse to (finally) use the beads I’ve collected…stay tuned.
